What is PrEP?
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily medication that helps prevent HIV in people who are at high risk. When taken consistently, it can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%.
What is DoxyPEP?
DoxyPEP (Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication taken after potential exposure to certain STIs (sexually transmitted infections) to reduce the risk of infection.
PrEP is recommended for individuals who are HIV-negative and at high risk for HIV, including those with an HIV-positive partner, multiple sexual partners, or those who inject drugs.
DoxyPEP may be recommended for individuals at high risk of STIs, such as those with multiple sexual partners, those who have had recent STIs, or those engaging in sex without condoms.
PrEP: When taken daily as prescribed, PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection from sex by up to 99% and from injection drug use by at least 74%.
DoxyPEP: Studies have shown that taking doxycycline after potential exposure to STIs like chlamydia and syphilis can significantly reduce the risk of these infections.
PrEP: Some people may experience mild side effects like nausea or headaches, but these typically go away over time. Serious side effects are rare.
DoxyPEP: Some individuals may experience side effects such as nausea, photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight), or gastrointestinal issues. Most side effects are mild and temporary.
PrEP should be taken daily to prevent HIV should an exposure occur.
DoxyPEP should be taken within 72 hours after potential exposure to an STI. The typical regimen involves taking a single dose or a short course as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
